Is a Czech driver’s license valid in Germany?
Yes! According to the 3rd EU Driving Licence Directive (2006/126/EC) , a driving licence acquired in one EU country is recognized in all member states, provided the residency principle is observed (at least 185 days ).
Important rulings on recognition:
ECJ ruling of 26 April 2012: Compliance with the residency principle = full recognition despite the obligation to undergo a medical-psychological assessment (MPU) in Germany.
Higher Regional Court of Hamm, judgment of 26.09.2012: Confirmation of the validity of a driving licence acquired in Spain.
ECJ ruling of 06.04.2006: Recognition of an Austrian driving licence despite prior German revocation.
ATTENTION: Czech driving licenses currently unavailable!
Due to new German regulations, the Czech authorities are currently not issuing driver’s licenses to German citizens . Therefore, we recommend alternative countries such as Poland or Hungary to legally obtain an EU driver’s license . Contact us for a personal consultation!
